Viviparous Lizard

Viviparous Lizard

There are only four species of lizards living in the Polish mountains. Viviparous Lizard (Lacerta vivipara) is quite common. In the Tatra Mountains it can be found up to the elevations of 1700 meters and is the most commonly found reptile around there. Its biggest enemy is a European Viper (Vipera berus). The name of the species is derived from its ability to give birth to live young, which is an adaptation to a cool climate. Viviparous lizards begin hibernation in September or October. The Low Beskid - July 2007.
