Strenuous  Sucess!

Very strenuous one! Especially for the entire thing being trailed to the summit! I'm glad I got to go up there before burned it last season! :/

Great ski day  Sucess!

Had to carry skis for the lower 1.5 miles, but had great views and a calm day up top and good skiing on the way down to make up for the hard work.

Larch buds and big skunks  Sucess!

The trail could be a bit steeper down low, nice for bikes I guess. Lots of consolidated snow on top. Nice views, glad I chose to do this on my long drive back to SLC.

Southwest ridge from Camas Lakes  Sucess!

It had been a long time since I'd been up Ward Mountain so I decided to head up there again, but this time from a different direction. Camas Lakes are quite beautiful and visiting alpine lakes always helps to make the heat of the summer more tolerable. Plenty o' fish in there, too. From the upper lake it is slightly steep depending on your route up to the ridgeline, and for the rest of the way up the ridge to the summit there is some boulder hoppin' to do, but overall it ain't so bad. And you know about the views. A nice summer day...!

Good and bad alike  Sucess!

With thephotohiker, I climbed this peak by the west ridge, and that was a fun scramble. We took the trail down, and it was steep and hot with lots of blowdowns-- not fun at all. I would hate to hike up that trail.

Nice to go in the fall   Sucess!

The south face can be unbearable in the summer, the fall offers some great views of the changing larch trees.

Hot Day  Sucess!

The trail was longer but also less brutal than the bitterroot hiking guidebook describes.

Defeated on snowshoes

Along with friends Erik And Josh, We attempted Ward Mountain by standard east face route. Did not even put snowshoes on till about 6000. Made it over 8000 and found some very nice snow, but ran out of time and legs too. It was wonderful to get that high so early in the year.

Smokey July  Sucess!

Hiked this peak during wildfire season and had to stop frequently to get some oxygen. One of the Bitterroots more demanding standard trail hikes. Lady bugs at the summit were vicious!! Ya... lady bugs can bite!

Trail  Sucess!

Nice views, but a less exciting and fairly strenuous walk to get them. Overall a nice dayhike.

Trail  Sucess!

Did this one with my dad several years back. We had an old copy of the Bitterroot Hiking guidebook that said the trail was 3.5 miles to the top. Right...

standard trail  Sucess!

10/12/08
Hiked through the snow and fog to find blue sky on top.

9/22/07
The turning of the Larch made this hike very enjoyable. Little bit of rain on top, but still good views. Saw definite signs of "off-trail" motorcycle use (six inch troughs throughout alpine areas). Will be back when the snow falls.

winter w/ the mutt  Sucess!

Broke trail with snowshoes to the summit, ouch. at least the dog was still able to follow in the deep tracks. 30 mph winds on top, so didn't hang out long.

Bluebird Day for a Ski  Sucess!

A group of 13 of us skied up in staggered formation. Couple dogs too. Upper 2000' provided for some good skiiung on way down. Wasn't enough snow covering burn area yet and no snow on first 1.5 miles of trail.

Point-To-Point  Sucess!

5nov09 - Climbed the Standard Route with my friend Jim Greenfield. I was coming down with a bug so Jim had to practically carry my during the top sections of the climb as we post-holed through knee-deep snow.

12jul08 - Bob Sihler and I made this one of the five summits we climbed during a point-to-point outing which began at the Camas Lakes Trailhead and finished at the standard trailhead for Ward Mountain.

24sep06 - I used the Camas Cirque West Ridge Route to reach the summit. It was far more interesting than just "hiking" to the summit on the standard trail.

But I have to admit some places were pretty darn slippery from the melting recent snow. It was almost dangerous.

I used the "standard" route to descend, making it a point-to-point outing. Very nice!

25jun05 - Climbed Ward for the first time with my wife, Linda. We found the standard trail to be rather uninteresting.

Trail Route  Sucess!

Very nice day, climbing with Moni. It appeared to us the snow on top was quite a bit less than on many of the surrounding peaks, so we congratulated ourselves on having made a good choice! The route up this mountain is all excellent trail, but the summit view is worth it—spectacular perspective of some of the most rugged of the Bitterroots! This was my second time doing Ward Mtn (first time sans camera), with the other climb—I think three summers ago—being on one of those hot summer days that made traversing the burn a torment, and the stream three-fourths of the way up a blessing!

Trail Route  Sucess!

Probably a good idea that I picked a cool, breezy day for Ward. This can be a long, hot one otherwise. Except for a couple of hikers down low, had the place to myself.
