Highpoint #24  Sucess!

My second stop on my weekend jaunt to the highpoints of SD and ND while on a project assignment in ND. Paid my courtesy fee to the owners, hiked to the top without anyone else around. Good views (for North Dakota).

HP No. 25  Sucess!

Summited with my two daughters (No. 13). Had a little trouble finding the gravel road but only a few additional minutes to arrive at the newer, but abandoned house and out buildings (no one home). Drove down the lane to a point just beyond the old farm house, an open area which we hoped would minimize contact with snakes. Crossed over into the pasture near this point, per the Winger's book, and had a nice hike all the way up. Very nice day to hike, with great views from the top. We were the only climbers today. I noticed a walk thru gate about a half mile into the hike which would have saved us some work opening the drive thru gate further back. Wary of snakes all the way but did not see or hear any. Great to be half way finished with the list. This was HP 5 of 5 on this trip.

White Butte  Sucess!

Beautiful country. I really enjoyed this hike. Didn't see a soul except two porcupines.

Lucky 13  Sucess!

I struggled with finding the gravel road turnoff but I found great directions in another section of this site that was spot on. It was a clear, blustery early morning, it was beautiful. NO RATTLERS!

No Snakes!  Sucess!

YEAH! Afyter climbing Mt Borah two days before this was a welcome stroll. Directions fairly easy to the trailhead and parked at the oil drum/"Road Closed" sign. Saw no rattlesnakes but did see a young Mountain Short Horned Lizard - CUTE!

did it the hard way  Sucess!

I knew it was south of town so I pulled over off Rt 85, looked for some high buttes and found it after numerous ascents. Had to jump a bunch of barbed wire fences and walk through miles of prairie grass but there were so many flowers it made for a nice walk (I did wear long pants). Three hours to find, seventy minutes to get back to my car parked just off Rt 85. Got caught in a microburst three hours later in Williston that was seriously annoying; none of the NoDak drivers knew to flee for safety when storm clouds of that power came tearing through. Instead they slowed down or stopped in traffic so they could ensure everyone stuck in traffic with them could get pounded by hail.

1st Highpoint  Sucess!

Hiked this with a friend on a whim while travelling home from a few weeks in Montana. I enjoyed the badlands scenery. Not too many cars driving by on the highway. No rattlers, plenty of cattle though.

State High Point # 24  Sucess!

I'd always heard that the hardest part about reaching the summit in summer was the rattlesnakes. We were there in August but didn't see a single one. Beautiful views from up top. Enjoyed our climb and visit.

Did this as a detour today. Really beautiful badland country. Interrupted an eagle eating his lunch on the summit.

Beatiful  Sucess!

The trail of 0.7 mile to the hill bottom is closed for vehicles. Took us an hour to run from our car to the top and back. Managed to get back right before sunset. Beautiful view. No other human beings/vehicles around.

SHP #13  Sucess!

I was surprised not to see a living soul anywhere near White Butte as it was Memorial Day; however, the North Dakota weather was not kind on this day. I didn't even see any other vehicles from the moment I left the highway.

Nice to have the summit to myself, but I didn't stay long; the wind almost blew this Clydesdale off his feet, and I started getting pelted with sleet as I signed the register.

too much tall grass

Wish the path was a little more worn out. Hiking in prairie grass always freaks me out not being able to see snakes.
