A Stroll across Lake Superior

A Stroll across Lake Superior

A walk to see Lake Superior sea caves normally accessible only by boat begins with a stroll across a bay of frozen Lake Superior. This route, only available at certain times of certain Winters, is almost 2.5 miles of flatness, but it is sometimes bitterly cold and windy. But the reward is sea caves transformed into icicle palaces. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Feb 8, 2014. Wind Chill warnings existed earlier in the day.

Pressure ridges?

I see a few mounds of snow. Are they pressure ridges on the beach or in the middle of the lake? I also see an elongated black object in the distance. Is that a ship stuck in the ice?

Re: Pressure ridges?

The mounds are icy boulders with sand embedded in them, and I like your theory that they are pressure ridges on the beach (I could not see where the beach ends and the lake begins, but I assumed they were at shoreline at the time).

The black object is Eagle Island, offshore this part of the the National Lakeshore (not one of the 'Apostles' however).

A Stroll across Lake Superior

That would be a fantastic hike to see the ice caves, especially hoofing it across the frozen lake.....
