Ariel view of Vancouver Island's impressive snow-capped backbone: This includes Mt. Arrowsmith, which for many years was thought to be the highest mountain on the island. It's lofty summit stands out above the towns of Nanaimo and Port Alberni, and can be seen from Vancouver. At the turn of the twentieth century, the famous Swiss mountaineer Edward Whymper, (of the Matterhorn fame), was reported to have climbed the summit of Arrowsmith. Arrowsmith is the highest and most visible mountain on southern Vancouver Island. Rising to a majestic height of 5962 feet (1817 m), Mt.Arrowsmith's massif dominates the skyline from both sides of Vancouver Island. It is the largest area of sub-alpine and alpine climatic zone south of Strathcona Provincial Park. It is also home to several rare and endangered plants and animals, and is an increasingly popular destination for outdoor recreation enthusiasts. Ha, ha ... did somebody say Arrowsmith ??? Not sure what you've got there

But it sure isn't Arrowsmith.

Arrowsmith doesn't face another range of comparable height across a valley but rather stands in isolation. It's much craggier with the "Bumps" one of the most distintive alpine features on the Island. Nothing in this shot fills the bill.

Might possibly be the mountains to the south between the Chemainus River valley and Cowichan Lake.

Sorry to be a killjoy!

Re: Not sure what you've got there

That's not fair!

It's hard to distinguish peaks from the air!

Looking at the map, I knew Arrowsmith had to be there somewhere!

It's difficult to take pictures from a 747.
I think I'll just close my eyes next time!

: ))
