Brief overview Gorski kotar (The Mountain District) is Central Croatian mountainous region rather than range,
located between the Kvarner Bay on the southwest and the Pannonian basin on the northeast.
To the north, the Kupa river is the border between Gorski kotar and Slovenia's Bela Krajina region.
It is surrounded by mountains Kapela, Klek, Risnjak, Sneznik, Bjelolasica, and rivers Kupa, Cabranka and Dobra.
It is the most forested and one of best preserved nature areas in Croatia.
Habitat for a vast variety of fauna and flora, GK is popular
with nature lovers because of unspoilt and not too crowded areas for climbing and caving, as well as nifty hiking trails.
The highest point of GK is Mt. Bjelolasica at 1534m, followed by Mt. Risnjak at 1528 m.
These days most of the visitors just drive through
Gorski Kotar down the Zagreb-Rijeka highway,
often unaware of its woods and mountain rivers, aiming for the tourist resorts on the coast.
