Halicz and Tarnica Group in Western Bieszczady

Halicz and Tarnica Group is the group of highest peaks of the Western Bieszczady (also known as the High Bieszczady). The peaks lie within Bieszczady National Park and are the prettiest part of this mountain range.

Mount Tarnica at 1346 meters is the highest peak of the Polish part of Bieszczady Mountains. It is also one of the 28 peaks known as the Crown of Polish Mountains. Tarnica in Romanian means "saddle" and the shape of the mountain does resemble it. From the summit of Tarnica one can see Szeroki Wierch with its highest point Tarniczka (1315 m), Mount Krzemien (1335 m) and Bukowe Berdo (1313 m).

Mount Halicz (1333 m), another massive in the group is the third highest mountain of Polish Bieszczady. Other peaks in this massive include : Kopa Bukowska (1320 m), Wołowy Garb (1248 m), Rozsypaniec (1280 m), Połonina Bukowska and Kińczyk Bukowski (1251 m). The summit of Mount Halicz is known for great panoramic views and surise viewing from up there is a tradition among many hikers. On a clear night it is possible to see the lights of the city of Lwow in the Ukraine.

This area is home to many endemic species of plants and full of wildlife. It is also known for its primeval Carpathian forests. The Rearch and Rescue unit has a station in this area. It is located at the pass between Mount Tarnica and Mount Krzemien.
