Access update
Access is limited to the area now. The gate right at the highway is quite often locked, and as of June 2014 there was a rock slide blocking the road 2km up. It can be hiked from the highway (completed Alexandra that way the second time), but it adds several extra hours. Best bet is to hike up and camp between the 2 peaks. Make the extra elevation gain worth it!
A steep bushy gully took us up to the west ridge. Then a bit of reasonable angle snow saw us on the south shoulder. Then a bit of rock scrambling took us round to Thumb and to the top. Nice!
Stunning all round views in clear and perfect weather.
Back at camp in plenty of time for an afternoon snooze.
