catullusturkey day on alta peak  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 22, 2007

Led group of five (peter, pi-chuan, amanda, brad, and me) via pear lake with Stanford's Redwood Outdoors Club. Had thanksgiving dinner at pear lake (including freeze-dried turkey meals!). Just enough snow to make punching through in between boulders annoying.

TwillsSki it!

I was skiing the Sierra High Route and we couldn't resist taking some time off and skiing off the summit of Alta... Fun.

Date Climbed: Jun 15, 2004

Started off as a solo hike, then had to turn around with the top of the peak in near sight due to thunderstorm approaching.

justinjohnsenChute up from the NE  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 3, 2007
Continued a two-day cross-country trek from Mount Silliman, by way of the lower Tablelands, where there was a horde of miniature grasshoppers. After dropping down into the Kaweah valley to camp, it was up by lake-hopping to a ridge east of Pear Lake.

We followed the standard route southwest past the cliffs above Pear, then took a "shortcut" up a slippery class 2, maybe easy 3, chute on the north face of Alta's nearest northeast neighbor. Another stunning set of views, although a pack of persistent bumblebees drove us off the summit after lunch.

An option we scouted, but didn't try, was the ridge traverse from "Winter Alta" to Alta itself. On the west side of the col from Winter Alta south to an unnamed peak, my climbing buddy spied an easy green (grassy) chute leading up. Looking back from Alta's summit, the ridge traverse looked like a straightforward boulder scramble.

CookieMonsterMy Once Per Year Group Climb  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 8, 2006

Late start + big sea level group = 8:30PM exit. Had fun camping at Lodgepole the prior night but nearly froze when the temperature dropped into the 20s. We started around 11AM and reached the summit at 4:30PM. Amazing view! This is one of the best day hikes in the area.

I came back for the Hump Trail to Pear Lake in July, 2007. Lots of backpackers (including a guy carrying a dufflebag in his arms) underestimated "The Hump," so be prepared. Will be back for an ascent of Alta from Pear Lake.

Date Climbed: Jun 22, 2007

Camped overnight at Muhrten(spelling?) Meadow. Next morning we climbed up to the top, the first people in our group saw a black bear. Great views, good trail. Lots of little annoying bugs and such on the top. Great views, fun summer trip.

Date Climbed: Feb 18, 2007

It was a struggle but we made the summit on a stormy winter day in a white out. Well worth it as a winter summit.

Date Climbed: Aug 12, 2006

After hiking to Alta meadow, made a scramble up the slopes to alta peak before bisecting with the trail leading to the summit. Nice views, was a good warm up for the half dome/clouds rest in a day a week later.

Date Climbed: Jun 5, 2004
Same route, 2wk after my previous attempt. No issues this time thanks to beautiful weather. No register to be found, although hordes of marmots call the summit area home.

mlarkin2002Whiteout near summit
Date Climbed: May 22, 2004
Made it to within 100' vertical feet of the summit. Engulfed in fog bank & clouds. Combined with the snow on the ground, this made it impossible to find the true summit blocks. Visibility was near 0 in all directions. I had to follow my own footsteps out.

Figured I had to do this one seeing as everyone else I know has done it. Turned out to be pretty nice on top despite some ominous looking clouds. Hiked it with Rob O who was willing to skip climbing to do this hike.....again!

Luciano136Another 24h day - Alta Peak trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 2, 2006

Hiked with Allen (kngalaric). Despite my 50+ hour work week, I decided it would be a great idea to wake up at 3:30am on Saturday and take a day trip up to Alta Peak. Besides the last 2 miles, the hike itself isn't that hard but I was TIRED and dreaded the hike down! Some stomach issues on top of it kind of turned it into torture! The drive back was a battle too! And the day after I worked from noon to 6:30pm. Labor day deserves its name this year!

But... other than that :), it's a great peak with awesome views. I took a lot of pictures of peaks I have yet to figure out what their names are. Allen also posted a trip report:

Bruno, Chrissy and I went for another mad Sierra dash. Drive from SoCal, leave at 4AM, hike, summit, return to sender. All in all a great day.

Peak Baguette

Day trip from the Bay Area - so beautiful! Was slipping, sliding & sloshing for the final mile since I have no snow technique. Couldn't find the register - probably hidden by the hungry looking marmots at the peak!

mjrangelx2  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 22, 2006

Took my wife and a friend this time. We camped at Pear Lake and then did Alta cross country from Pear Lake the next day. It only took two and a half to three hours at a relaxed pase and most of the climbing was very easy. Only one section was a bit of loose class 3. If you want to do the loop like we did, I definately recommend ascending from pear Lake rather than the Alta Pk trail because coming down the Alta Pk Trail is much more enjoyable than going up it like I did my first time up Alta. I wish we had brought axes because there was still plenty of snow up there to do some snow climbing which would have been even more fun!
