Backcountry permit you can obtain at the visitor center for free, or do what I did - pick up extra slips and fill it yourself. You keep a yellow copy and leave the white copy in a drop box by the visitor center. The same permit applies to all inner canyon hikes and rock climbing inside the canyon.
