Anniversary of the birth of Lionel Terray

On 25 July 2019 Lionel Terray, one of the greatest, most inspired and above all generous mountaineers of all time would have turned 98, he was born in 1921.
Great pioneer of mountaineering, Lionel was the protagonist of several very important achievements, first in the Alps with the second ascent of the Eiger North face in 1947 with his companion Louis Lachenal ... both were part of the Annapurna team ...
Lionel then made several important ascents, such as the Fitz Roy in Patagonia in 1952; the Chomo Lonzo in 1954; the Makalu in 1955; the Chacraraju in Peru in 1956; the Jannu and the Nilgiri in 1962.
Lionel terray died in the Vercors in September 1965. In the company of his friend Marc Martinetti, the two climbers had just emerged from the great difficulties of the Voie de la fissure en arc de cercle on the East face of Gerbier when it happened the accident. The two bodies were found still tied together at the foot of the wall after a fall of 300 meters. Lionel Terray was 44 years old and Marc Martinetti 25 years old
