ground, where they were eating shellfish?

21 foot waves? - must have really ROCKED the boat. I still remember my trip to Alaska; no penguins, but lots of Caribou & salmon. Brings to my mind the movie, "March of the Penguins." Take care & Bonjour.

No, it's not blood, it's a type of lichen that grows there. Yeah, the 21 foot waves were thrashing everybody around so we all looked like we just finished a bottle of Jack Daniels!

I remember that type of lichen, the one that makes the snow turn red. When you dream about cold! I went up to western Alaska in March, to watch the Iditirod races. The Bering Sea was completely frozen over. I asked my friend if I could hike out to an island, and she said that's "off limits" because of polar bears. I just wanted to keep my blood flowing! Take care, icypeak & cheers!!!

It really was! The penguins are so cute, some of the chicks will waddle right up to you, look you over and then snuggle up. Love your climbing photos!

You should have gotten a picture of a snuggling chick, that would be beyond words!

I agree, would have been a priceless shot..but they were quite the scardycats with the camera, not sure why, but I did not want to frighten them.

Thanks very much for your kind words. It really was an unbelievable place to visit (never experienced such quiet) and it gave me memories that will remain with me forever. Oh yeah, and the penguins were really cool too, trippin' over their own feet all the time!

Thanks a lot! Yes, they are my most favorite of all. They are very funny and mischievous, when building nests out of little rocks (and there is a shortage of rocks in Antarctica) they swipe each others' rocks when the nest owner turns away!
