Bat in Grand Canyon

Bat in Grand Canyon

This little bat was on the ground and appeared injured. He or she was near the North Kaibab Trail, at around elevation 4650 feet, and apparently did not want to make friends with my camera lens, hence the open mouth. Injured or not, he or she then flew away. Photo taken 14 July 2007.

Cool little creatures

I love them..glad to read she or he flew away. We had one fly in our house the other day..we were able to get her outside again. There so neat to watch them fly...you can barely hear them in flight..Very cool :)

Re: Cool little creatures

I enjoy living in the desert and seeing bats flying around at dusk, catching insects. I also like how silent they are.

Once I was doing a trans-canyon hike in Grand Canyon, and I was hiking the lower portion of the North Kaibab trail at night. With the tunnel vision of my flashlight, I could see that bats were flying all around me. Their flight was so silent that without the flashlight, I would not have known they were there.

And they are really good with their echolocation. They flew all around me, very close at times, without making contact. Very cool for sure!

Re: Sweet Shot

Thanks. And if you click on the photo, the full-size image is 1600x800. It looks a little better than the one on this page.

Cool Bat ...

I think they become disorientated and
loose their SONAR ability. Then, they suddenly
switch it back on. That is, if they're
similiar to the bats we have in Arizona.
Awesome.

Re: Cool Bat ...

Sounds like a reasonable explanation. And I cannot resist saying that this bat in the Grand Canyon is definitely similar to bats in Arizona!
