thanks Anders

for the fantastic TR, as well as the Gannett peak report.

quick question: do you not need ropes for both peaks? I live in New England and had some snow climb experience but never needed ropes so I don't know how to use them to travel on glacier.

Thanks!

Re: thanks Anders

Thanks for ready. Um, I know that some do use ropes; especially for glacier travel on Gannett. If you don't want to use a rope then it's probably better to go earlier in the season as snow bridges will cover crevasses. This can be a double edged sword as you won't be able to see them. The bergschrund in particular gets people worried, but it wasn't bad at all when I was there in July.

As for Whitney, it depends on the snow conditions. If the couloir or Notch is very icy then you might want a rope. I've been to Whitney 4 times in March or April and it hasn't been icy. So, in a nutshell I'd say you can definitely get away with not using a rope on both peaks.

Cheese

Enjoyed sharing the trip...though I immediately had to go out and buy some pepper jack cheese.

Re: Cheese

I had some today! Sorry if you're a recovering pepperjack'a'holic...it is probably the best cheese ever.
