Approach

The route starts at the Black Crater Trailhead. Getting here is described in the "Getting There" section.

Route Description

The trail is pretty straight-forward. Follow the switchbacks up the north side (good view point of Mt. Washington, Three Fingered Jack and Mt. Jefferson about 1/4 mile into the hike on the left). From there the trail traverses the valley carved out and extending from the summit crater. It then heads west up to a shoulder. More switchbacks follow to the summit plateau of black cinders and a 30 foot summit crag (easy scramble to the top).

The trail is about 3.7 miles long and gains about 2500 feet of elevation.

Essential Gear

None needed.
