Re: Bob Stewart Peak?

Here's a USGS map from a different program showing Box Elder Peak:

Maybe the change was made in 1998.

Re: Bob Stewart Peak?

I noticed that the name was changed on some maps. I don't know anyone who calls it Bob Stewart Peak though. I know that he helped turn over a large portion of the land in the Wellsville Mountains to the forest service in the 1930s. Naming a peak after him makes sense. I don't know if it was intentional or an error.

Some maps show Point 8626 NE of Wellsville Cone to be Bob Stewart Peak. It looks like a peak when viewing it from the valley floor, but it doesn't have much prominence above the saddle. Perhaps the name was transferred intentionally(?). It's hard to officially name a peak in a wilderness area though, so it could have been an error as well.

I also don't know anyone who calls the higher peak Bob Stewart Peak. I will always think of the peak as Box Elder.

It would be interested to hear the history behind the name change.

Re: Bob Stewart Peak?

Box Elder Peak has retained its name. Peak 8626 is now known as Bob Stewart Peak. They chose this peak because of its prominence from Cache Valley. A trail goes near its summit north of Brushy Canyon and on the ridge northeast of Wellsville Cone. Many topo maps may still have Box Elder Peak labeled as Bob Stewart Peak. The name Box Elder Peak was well liked so they decided to keep it and not change it.
