Braunschweiger Hütte from the east, from the trail on the Karleskogel

That is, the hiking trail leads to the Rettenbachjoch (2990m), and from there you can easily descend on the other side over the Rettenbachferner and down into the Rettenbach valley. Usually no glacier gear is required, but it's best to ask about the route conditions at the Braunschweiger Hütte. An alternative to the Rettenbachjoch route is to go over the Pitztaler Jöchl. However, that's where I had come from yesterday, and I like to go where I haven't gone before. From the saddle, the Karleskogel can be ascended via the south ridge. However, that's not a hiking trail but a climbing route, with sections of UIAA grade III. 1 July 2011.
