Bura wind, strongest in...

Bura wind, strongest in Europe, is one of many trademarks of Velebit massif, which is in the Bura cap then. Velebit channel looks like this when it is very strong, which means that gusts easily reach 120km/h or more. They are so strong that Bura blows clouds of spray of the sea surface. When it reaches hurricane force (Orkanska Bura), which is frequent in winter, it is not possible to stay here and takes pictures. Velebit channel is in thick cloud of spray then, visibility zero. On this location, near Maslenicki Most bridge on Zadar - Zagreb highway gust of 305km/h or 180mp/h was measured! Sustained wind is around 170km/h then! Hurricane force Bura can last between single gust to several days, depending on how high and low pressures are set. Photo: Aleksandar Gospic

Re: Wow!

haha, surely ;-) I asked my friend who likes surfing why he doesn’t go to Velebit channel. There have been cases that Bura threw cargo ships on shore. Most recent dramatic event was in 90's. Ferry departed from Pag island towards Velebit shore. It is only 15mins of across Velebit channel but Bura began so suddenly, reaching hurricane force in matter of minutes. They couldn't go back nor proceed. Captain decided to go for Rab island. It was blowing up to and above 200km/h. Till they reached nearby Rab island waves were so high that all the cars and trucks on the ferry were smashed!! Once there it was just pile of demolished metal in the garage, incredible. And it wasn't a small ferry. I still remember faces of those people on TV who said that on shore they felt reborn ;-)
