Cairn mitosis?

Sunset light on the (false?) summit of East Royce, the northernmost 3000-footer in the Baldface-Royce Range, where it seems a new cairn has been budded. June 16, 2007 Creative Commons License This image is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 License.

cairn-itis

Weird illustration of this disease. Is the big cairn on a false summit? Were the Cairn Builders afraid that someone would get lost?

Furthermore,
See that shadow coming from the lower right? That's a signpost!

Re: cairn-itis

Actually, somebody just posted a note on a similar photo (taken by one of my companions) suggesting that this is a false summit, and that there's a somewhat higher point further along the trail, with views northward. I think I remember spotting something that might have been a continuation of the trail, but I concluded it didn't go anywhere (certainly not up). But I was tired and may not have seen some slightly higher ground blocked by trees.
