Fine Illustration - Controversial TopicTo Fellow (especially US:)) SPers,
Have you changed the lightbulbs? Do you ever open the window, let the wind dry your clothes, do you ever use public transport, walk or ride your bike outside the mts, e.g. while going to the grocer's?

Re: Fine Illustration - Controversial TopicAs a Californian, I am ashamed to answer NO to most.
Question is, are you Europeans doing all these things you mentioned? I am sure you have more "yes" answers than we do.

Re: Fine Illustration - Controversial Topicdon't forget to ask, "do you limit bathing and showering to just two or three times per week?"

Re: Fine Illustration - Controversial TopicWell, I'm sure we have more 'yes' answers while we're NOT doing all these things :-) The average US household gives off about twice as much CO2 per day as the European average, but I think if we had as much space and means as you do, we'd drive more and have bigger houses as well, which still doesn't mean that it isn't worth using fluorescent compacts (frankly, I just changed them just in the kitchen recently) or turning off AC and opening the window when the air's fresh outside.

To TracyIt would be unfair of me to ask, as that's something I myself find next to impossible to do.

Re: To Tracy, and JacekWell Jacek, it's not as bad as you think.
I once didn't bathe for nearly a month. I was treking in the Himalayas, and everybody else stunk too. If evrybody cuts down to three showers a week, then it won't be so bad. However, none of these measures save energy in a big way. What we need to do is to change from fossil fuel to solar and wind, and learn to drive less.

Re: To Tracy, and JacekAs to stinking, Marc, OK I can be a mtn reeker though my record is much less impressive:-), but it's different in the home/office, you don't get so much fresh air throughout the day.
As to the big way, I couldn't agree more plus maybe more energy-efficient cars, kind of Japanese style. And riding lawn mowers out! Plus the house's envelope/insulation checkup. That should be good enough, I think.

Re: To TracyI find it next to impossible too; however when I was living in the Netherlands, more than one kostvrouw (land lady) had the rule of no more than two baths/showers per week! As for everything else mentioned...it's all good and it all helps make a difference!

incredible!Well, to further this conversation along, I (granted a northern canadian) never use a dryer - hair or clothes, don't know what air condition is other than an open window and usually bike to work (these days skiing is better!)but I must admit when it is under - 20 C I take my volkwagen bug. But bathing, mmmhhh. I take 1 minute showers (the daily kind) except once a week a long soak. Just gotta do it. But here in North BC do not have a shortage of water or hydro but most people here conserve anyway. I also live small - home and car. My biggest footprint is travelling by jets to faraway places once or twice a year.

Re: incredible!Yes, everyone should learn from you. But, are you serious about ONE MINUTE showers?
I don't think I have ever been able to take one minute shower. But, I could go for a 3 minute shower. I think I can handle that.
Thank for dropping by Katie,
Marc

Re: incredible!well, it's never hot enough for ac for one thing and I only live (these days) 5 km for work. So it's easy being green! But yah, I learnt to do quick showers in Canadian Parks where they charge you a loonie for a minute or maybe I just have an impatient husband?!?
