Second time  Sucess!

We did this hike in 2011 when the son was 8 and a whole lot shorter. We watched a guy go up the short vertical stretch and at that time I did not feel comfortable with the son doing that. I said we would return. We returned today. The road was clear sailing and so was the hike. Scattered snow patches provided cooling relief. One vehicle was at the trailhead when we arrived just before 8 AM. A peek inside revealed a pad and sleeping bag. We crossed paths about 3/4 of the way in. It appears he was taking photos at sunrise.

The son and I cruised up to the top and lolly-gagged up there enjoying the view before heading back down. The son suggested cruising the ridge line to avoid losing/gaining elevation via the trail. He suggestion was a good one. A very pleasant Father’s Day it was.

West ridge from Nez Perce Pass  Sucess!

We were surprisingly able to drive most of the way up to the pass - to within about a mile, before I had to turn the Ranger around and park it. It was a beautiful warm, sunny day, and Castle Rock is a really cool looking mountain! Easy snowshoe hike and some fun scrambling up to the top of the Rock. Great views into the Frank Church & the Selway-Bitterroot! On the way back we met a guy who was driving the road with his suped-up rig, bringing clients and gear over the pass and down to the Magruder area for bear hunts and float trips down the Selway River. Nice guy - he gave us a ride the mile back down to our truck so we could BS with him some more and enjoy the cold brew he kindly shared with us!

Fun Day  Sucess!

A fun and pretty easy hike with Linda. The weather was perfect.

We also got a kick out of the young and curious Gray Jays that followed us for over half a mile.

Nez Perce Trail  Sucess!

Had this day to myself. Not surprising considering it is a bit of a drive to get to the trailhead.
