China Cliffs, Sucia Island
China Cliffs are located on Sucia Island, in the archipelago of the San Juan Islands in the Salish Sea. China Cliffs got their name from the rum runners and migrant worker smugglers of the 1920's who would occasionally hide their illegal products or passengers in the cave like openings of these rocks when pursued by the authorities. Now with the island being a marine park this sandstone formation makes for great bouldering. Sucia is a popular stop for kayakers and sailboats cruising this area of the Pacific Northwest.
