I always wanted to witness and photograph Brocken (a formal word for this rainbow). They normally happen in a white-out so I guess you'll have to climb in uncertain weather more often to witness them :)

I saw one from the summit of Mt. St. Helena in northern Napa County one day. Is the morning fog consistent enough there to improve one's probability of seeing a Brocken? I don't know.



I think the coolest part about them is the shadow of the viewer in the center of the rainbow. Spooky!

Yeah, but this is happening because of the shadow. Without shadow, no Brocken spectre.

this is really cool, never experienced one of these, but a similar almost 360 deg rainbow in the crater of mt waialeale on kauai
