Great backpacking trip from the valley floor. We started hiking the day after a snowstorm 4-6 inches of snow, so the park was relatively empty. Set up camp around the junction between the split in the trail for Half Dome and Clouds Rest. The next day mainly consisted of a slog through the snow; we were the first ones up since the snow, so route finding was a bit tricky. The last 500 feet were quite difficult due to nearly 2 feet of snow, but the view from the top was well worth the trouble. Did a quick trip up Liberty Cap on the way out; great way to end the trip.

Hiked up from Yosemite Valley via Mist and JMT trails on this sunny, cool day a couple of days after the early spring storms blew through. Some snow patches around 8,000 ft, a light blanket of snow covering almost all above 9,000 ft, starting around the base of the Pinnacles where the southward view opens up. Incredible views of the snow-covered northern aspects of the peaks to the south. Made half way up the summit block to just a couple of feet (about 20?) shy of the summit proper from the south ridge. Evaluated the snow/ice conditions and exposed rock-through-snow in one section and didn't like the looks of it at all, even with ice axe and helmet. The snow was a mix of icy snow cone and wet slush from the recent dusting, nothing firm. More of an evaluation of whether descent was safe. It sounds from trip reports that I am not the only one to have run into trouble in this one spot. Safety first!

Look forward to re-visiting if another opportunity comes around, though very content with where I got given the day's conditions.

DalianClouds Rest - Half Dome  Sucess!

Dalian

For the past 6 years, I did the Cloud's Rest - Half Dome loop.
( 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013).
Always in October.
I usually go from the Yosemite Valley to Clouds Rest first, sleep around or on top of the mountain, enjoy the sunset and the sunrise on the mountain. In the morning, after the sunrise and the breakfast, I walk down then up to Half Dome. The same day I get back to the Valley. It is one of the most beautiful routines of my life!

Lots of mosquitoes near the water features. By myself at the summit for the first several minutes on a Monday.

Climbed this with a full pack to train, almost a year after the first time. Even with a pack it was much easier than last time, so guess I'm getting stronger :)

Approximate date. Great alternative to Half Dome as a Central Yosemite hike with spectacular views and a lot fewer people, especially in the fall, when I did it.

Second year in a row doing a mid-April dayhike from Happy Isles, made it without snowshoes but lots of snow above 9000 feet and on summit. Trip report is HERE

Nice long dayhike from the valley. Mist Trail was closed which added an extra 2 miles to the hike. Patches of snow starting at 7000 ft continuing up the summit which, itself, was virtually free of snow.

Went up there as a side trip on day 2 of a JMT thru-hike that included 11 peaks. Glorious views of the Valley and Half Dome.

Turned back due to time and snow back in early May. But went back and well worth it, great views of the Valley.

Beautiful Spring day. Patches of snow on the trail here and there. Tenaya Creek up to the knees in places. All my life I've looked up to this place, and finally, finally got to visit it. Met another solo fella just before wading across the creek, and we hit it off. A great visit, all the way out and back.

Did the dayhike from Happy Isles - the trail was devoid of snow until patchy snow around 8,500 feet, then occasional deep snow above 9,500 feet. Glad I decided to lug the snowshoes up. Trip report at http://www.mountainhiker.org/trip_report.aspx?id=83

Quick day hike with John on a crisp, cold morning. I think the view from the summit is as good or better than any other point in Yosemite. Great vantage point between the Valley and Tuolumne.

Guided a group of female backpackers over Clouds Rest on day 2 from Tenaya Lake. Was my first time up and I almost felt bad that it had taken me this long to experience a real Yosemite classic! Spectacular views all around and a fun airy summit (for non-climbers anyway).
