Got off route on the way up (too far west) and scrambled up steep & loose, but found the ridge on the way down. Amazing views and great weather.

2nd ascent (#48 on 2nd DPS list finish). This time by the east ridge. Nice use trail, well ducked where necessary. The views begin in earnest once on the ridge.

Beautiful hike up the ridge route. Though the vast fields of gold are gone, there are still many, many flowers blooming up there, of many species. Yellowthroats were all over the top 800 vertical feet or so, and bees were buzzing on the summit.

Super Dave

Great climb up the ridge route. Really enjoyed the scenery and desert plant life. Had climbed Thimble in the morning, then Corkscrew in the afternoon. Trip Report

The desert floor was carpeted in green, ready to explode into a superbloom. I enjoyed the cacti. The views once near the summit were outstanding and the run down was quick.

Date Climbed: Jan 6, 2015

We climbed the wash route and descended the ridge route. Heather fell while scrambling in the gully and cut herself up a bit. Thankfully she was not seriously hurt.

In 6 days we also did Eagle Mountain, Beatty Mountain, Bonanza Mountain, Sutherland Mountain, Rainbow Mountain, Black Peak, Thimble Peak, Manly Beacon, Golden Canyon Peak, Jubilee Mountain, and Pyramid Peak. We also explored Rhylite Ghost Town, Leadfeild Ghost Town, Titus Canyon, Golden Canyon, Sidewinder Canyon, Badwater, Mosaic Canyon, and the Mesquite Dunes.

Climbed this with a large DPS group for one of the member's list finish. Champagne and whiskey on top made for a good party.

Have wanted to tag this one sinc 2008, but never got around to it. Unimpeachable views over Death Valley National Park - and on the other side, Thimble and the Grapevines blanketed in snow. Fun times!

jtellisHot day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 27, 2013

A fairly strenuous half-day hike with a good elevation gain -- it becomes much more challenging when hiking in hot weather. It was 92 at the base when I started was approaching 100 when I returned. Looks like the hiking season is winding down for these peaks in DVNP, but the heat meant I saw no one all day, which is nice. The views from this peak are absolutely incredible, and I encountered a herd of bighorn sheep on the ascent, as well as a pair of swallows at the top, who proceeded to swoop by my head a half-dozen times. Wish I could have done the buttes after this, but I instead headed to Stovepipe Wells for a $4 shower.

2011 - w/ Xenja Poljakowa.

It was the 1st ascent for both of us in Death Valley.

And Mr. Rory Kuykendoll... you and I both know Death Valley isn't the best, that distinction goes to Glacier.

jdmorehouseLittle Corkscrew Peak Makes This One  Sucess!

Corkscrew itself is not nearly as interesting by itself, but the side trip up Little Corkscrew makes the climb. Little Corkscrew is a narrow knife edge on a ridge below the main peak. It even has its own sign in register. If you're going to do Corkscrew, do yourself a favor and include a side trip to Little Corkscrew. You won't regret it, and it really doesn't take you much out of the way.

Perfect winter day in Death Valley. This is a very steep hike. I was impressed by how many names there were in the register from the last few weeks. People are gettin after it! The views from the top of this mountain to Badwater in the south, and Mount Whitney in the west are remarkable. Death Valley is the best.

WOLFrisingSteep Hike!  Sucess!

Winter 2013

Climbed with Caz from the Corkscrew Peak sign on the Daylight Pass road. Worked up the wash to the right and attained the ridge from there. Long, steep trail the rest of the way. A calf burner. Made the Panamint Springs burger and beer afterward quite worth it!

Date Climbed: Dec 6, 2010

Penelope May and I hiked more or less the DPS route starting from the "Corkscrew sign" on the highway on December 6th, 2010. We by-passed the initial hill to the right and followed the wash all the way to the 2 dry waterfalls. Above this we continued toward the "hole in the black rock", above which we turned first left then up aiming at the right side of the "Gunsight" pinnacle which is left of the large red tower on the skyline. Once at the saddle, we found the trail to the summit. Came down the SE facing rib, the one on which the DPS variation (going up) is located. Good hike, nice views.

Date Climbed: May 29, 2010

We started our hike at 6:00pm. I didn't think we were even going to start our hike at all given that it was getting so late. We made it to the really steep craggly part of the hike by 8:00pm, and hiked back mostly in the dark. We made it to our car by 10:30pm with a full moon on our side. Definitely the craziest night hike we've ever done. The trail was difficult to find at first; just really keep your eyes open for the carins along the way. Awesome & memorable experience. Next time I'd like to make it to the summit. Looking forward to it!
