Craters of the Moon Wilderness Area

Craters of the Moon Wilderness Area

From the top of Inferno Cone, this is a view of the Craters of the Moon Wilderness. With Petrified Forest NP, this was one of the first two areas inside National Park Service land to be designated federally-protected wilderness (1970). The next two were in Lassen Volcanic NP and Lava Beds NM (1972), all "featuring" barren lava beds. There is one designated campsite in this picture, one trail, and no water. The National Park Service opposed the Wilderness Act of 1964. Can you tell?

Re: Great!

Thanks! My family was a bit underwhelmed but I really enjoyed the weirdness of the place. Devilishly hot, though, even in June -- in the 90s with no shade anywhere.
