Crossing the Yampa River

Crossing the Yampa River at Outlaw Park. According to readings from Deer Park upstream, the river was flowing at approximately 500 cfs on this day. The water was thigh deep and not unreasonably cold. On the return trip that evening the river had risen by at least six inches and the current was noticeably stronger. Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado. October 2009.

Thanks! It was! In fact I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the weather and water levels cooperate so I can do it again next week :)

Sarah ...

In the spot where you entered and exited from
Outlaw Canyon, were your helmets and rope more of a "psychological advantage" or did you use your helmets and rope quite extensively throughout the canyon?

If it had been me, I'd have chosen the
"swimming" option, even though the river's
depth varies greatly along its length.

The rope was only necessary in one instance - for the rappel into the pool. Helmets were personal decisions. I think everyone wore one but me.
