Camillo Roberto Ferronato Born in Aosta, February 7, 1953. Carpentry craftsman and rock hound in the Mont Blanc, mostly in its southern sector. I hope that the few pieces shown in these images will allow one who first approaches this subject to get an idea of what our mountains conceal. On the other hand, these strange rocks fascinate layman and expert alike with their enigmatic appearances and their perfect geometrical shapes. There are many different minerals in the Alps, and the Mont Blanc massif is particularly rich. Sometimes, one finds crystals only a few millimeters long, but their lustre and perfection is beyond imagination. For twentyfive years, I have devoted myself to searching the mineral-laden cracks; enthusiasm has never failed me, though now it is waning a bit or, one could say, has gotten a little rusty. But beyond that, and the environment, and the effort that drains you... If your backpack is heavy with equipment when you leave, just imagine how it feels on your way back if you are lucky enough to fill it with shiny rocks. You search through rugged terrain, rich of surprises among the ice blocks, the rocks, and all the rest--I know something about that, unfortunately! In spite of all this, I cannot deny that in so many years, along with all the experience, I have accumulated a lot of fond memories. I have collected a large number of specimens, which I have little by little selected according to my own judgment--also because no two rocks are the same. And yet, since money is not my object, one has to wonder whether it is not some sort of virus I was born with that drives me toward stolidity and prevents me from abandoning this activity. Whatever it may be, I would like to add that beside the minerals of my home collection, I have others scattered among several exhibits in Valle d'Aosta. First, there are those on display below the Glacier Terrace of Punta Helbronner, at about 3500 meters of elevation: the "Hans Marguerettaz" Crystal Hall. It is the largest of these collections and it is made up partly by my samples and partly by the samples of one of my fellow rock hounds. This small permanent museum opened in 1997 and is dedicated to the Courmayeur alpine guide Hans Marguerettaz, who died on the 21 of August, 1994 in a glider accident. He was one of my partners. We spent six great seasons searching together. Later, in 2006, I put some crystals on exhibit at Forte di Bard, and recently in the Duca degli Abruzzi Museum in Courmayeur. Moreover, for three consecutive years--between 2003 and 2005--I have had the opportunity to display some samples in Martigny, at the Foundation Tissières. In 2004 Aosta's archaeological museum hosted the important exhibition "Cristalli e minerali in valle d'Aosta." I was involved, also in the writing of the prestigious catalog of the exhibition, so that in 2006 I was invited to Bologna's "Mineral Show," whose theme was Mont Blanc. Last but not least, I must talk of the over fifteen years during which I roped up with Osvaldo Cardellina. We were both young then. Osvaldo was a pragmatist, and already a renowned mountaineer, while I was only beginning to understand. I will always be grateful to him for introducing me to the mountains and, above all, for instilling in me enough culture to be able to love them. Our friendship will last forever, even if my goals later diverged from his. If I can count myself among the Mont Blanc "Cristalliers," I owe it to his patient teaching.

Camillo Roberto FerronatoNato ad Aosta il 7 febbraio del 1953. Artigiano edile e cercatore di cristalli del Monte Bianco, per lo più sul suo settore meridionale. Ebbene nutro la speranza che i pochi pezzi proposti qui in queste immagini siano abbastanza rappresentativi per farsi un'idea, almeno per chi è a digiuno in materia, di cosa celino le nostre montagne. D'altro canto questi strani oggetti affascinano sia il profano, sia l'esperto proprio per il loro aspetto enigmatico che per la forma geometrica perfetta. Naturalmente le specie mineralogiche sull'intero arco alpino sono numerose e non da meno il Massiccio del Monte Bianco: a volte si rinviene cristalli millimetrici (terre rare), ma la loro brillantezza e perfezione va oltre ogni immaginazione. Tuttavia per quel che riguarda il sottoscritto, sono ormai cinque lustri che mi dedico alla ricerca delle fessure mineralizzate e devo dire che l'entusiasmo non è mai venuto meno, sebbene ora sia in fase calante o arrugginito. Ma al di la di ciò è l'ambiente circostante e la difficoltà fisica che ti stronca, poiché se da una parte quando si parte in perlustrazione lo zaino è carico di attrezzatura varia, figuriamoci il ritorno a valle se si ha la fortuna di caricarlo di sassi splendenti e poi, d'altra parte, bisogna tener presente che se si verifica in territorio impervio è facile essere colti di sorpresa: tra blocchi di ghiaccio, pietre o quant'altro. E io purtroppo ne so qualcosa. Ciò nonostante non posso negare, che in tanti anni e con l'esperienza acquisita, mi sono tolto delle belle soddisfazioni accumulando un gran numero di esemplari che, man mano, ho dovuto selezionare secondo il mio criterio soggettivo, anche perché mai un campione è uguale a l'altro. Eppure c'è da chiedersi davvero, essendo il mio scopo non remunerativo, se non si tratta di una sorta di virus innato per raggiungere il rimbambimento e non smettere tale attività. Sia come sia, desidero aggiungere che, oltre ai minerali della mia personale collezione casalinga, ne possiedo altri sparsi su diverse sedi della Valle d'Aosta. Per cui in primis rimane situata sotto la terrazza dei ghiacciai di Punta Helbronner a circa 3.500 metri sala dei cristalli "Hans Marguerettaz", i più numerosi che condivido con un mio compagno. Del resto questo piccolo museo permanente inaugurato nel 1997, è stato dedicato a questa Guida Alpina di Courmayeur deceduto il 21 agosto del 1994 con l'aliante; era uno dei miei compagni di ricerca, (sei avvincenti stagioni). In seguito, nel 2006, ne ho inseriti al Forte di Bard e, ultimamente, all'interno del museo Duca degli Abruzzi di Courmayeur. Inoltre per tre anni consecutivi, ovvero tra il 2003 e il 2005, ho avuto l'opportunità di esporre campioni a Martigny (Foundation Tissières), mentre contemporaneamente (nel 2004) c'era ad Aosta l'importante evento espositivo al museo archeologico "Cristalli e Minerali in valle d'Aosta" collaborando così anche per la stesura del prestigioso catalogo e questo ha fatto si, che nel 2006, venissi invitato al "Mineral Show" di Bologna, con tematica il Monte Bianco. Infine, ma non ultimo non posso certo tralasciare gli oltre tre lustri precedenti che ho passato insieme al mio ex compagno di cordata Osvaldo Cardellina. Eravamo allora entrambi giovani. Osvaldo un pragmatico per natura era già un noto alpinista, mentre io a quei tempi ero un neofita. Infatti gli sarò sempre grato, non solo per avermi avvicinato alla montagna, ma soprattutto per essere riuscito ad inculcarmi un po' di cultura alpina fino ad amarla. La nostra amicizia non verrà mai meno, anche se ad un certo punto la mia mente è andate verso altri obiettivi. Tuttavia, se oggi posso annoverarmi tra i "Cristalliers" del Monte Bianco, lo devo appunto al suo paziente insegnamento.
