This mountain has some of the best out-croping of stone in the southeast. It is one of the southernmost climing opportunities in Georgia. Currahee is listed in the "Dixie Cragger's Atlas", Chris Watford, Market Place Press, Roswell, GA.
Routes are rated from 5.6 to 5.12a. This gives experienced climbers a place to introduce beginning climbers to top roping and yet still find a chalenge for them to try. You can spend days trying the many different routes.

Getting There

From Toccoa you follow the US17 bypass and turn off onto GA HWY 123. Ask locals how to get to the State Patrol Station and proceed about two and a half miles to a forest service road on the left. Just before the Milliken manufacturing plant there is an historical marker. Turn left and follow the dirt/gravel road to the top. This road can be very rough between scrapings so a vehicle with good ground clearance is recomended. I have made it in a Toyota Camrey, but you must take it slow. Follow this road to the top where the numerious comunication towers are located. Go to the left side of tower fence to locate the trail to the cliffs.

Red Tape

No fees, permits required. The top area can be closed by a gate after 10:00 PM

When To Climb

You can climb anytime of the year. In the summer the rock can heat up in the sun, so plan to climb early or late in July-September.

Camping

The fist few miles up the mountain is in the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area and allows camping but has no improved areas. Going further down Hwy 123 will lead to a Federal camping area that is open in the warmer months. Tallulah Gorge State Park is about 20 miles away and offers campsites. Call 706-754-7979 for reservations. There is also climbing in the gorge.
