Didn't feel like much research though you're probably right. The fact is that after visiting a country I like to know the background of what I've been seeing and usually the hiking guidebooks only give you a hint. Thus I like to look things up on wikipedia or elsewhere and one thing leads to another.
On this page translation from German to English for the history section was the toughest part.

If you plan to do some hiking: it's going to be HOT! Even in Troodos, temperatures are at 30°. Best hikes we did were:
- Cape Aspro and the chalk cliffs
- Akamas peninsula (don't go to Cape Arnaoutis, no real views) Moutti tis Sotiras, Smigies and Pissouromoutti
- Avakas Gorge
- Madari and Adelfoi
- Kionia from Macheiras Monastery
Everything else was a bit disappointing - too many trees few views.
