Desert Tortoise

Desert Tortoise

This is my husband's photo, but I have his permission to post it. This wild Desert Tortoise was spotted in Calico Basin area of Red Rocks, Nevada in February 2008. The desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) is found throughout the Mojave Desert of California, Nevada, Arizona, Mexico, and Utah. The tortoise has survived for millions of years, but today they are an endangered species.

This 'Calico Basin'

area must have some incredible wildlife
inhabiting it! The last time I saw a
desert tortoise in the wilds was back in
the early 1990s! Nice photo, Henry!!!

Re: This 'Calico Basin'

I know what you mean. It's true, it is very hard to meet them in the wild. I have never seen one even though I consider myself perceptive. Henry was really lucky!

What's really funny is that the rangers have a desert tortoise living near Red Rocks visitor center and they are waiting for him to come out of his hole because that would mean the spring is near.
This tortoise is living free near the same hills where the center is located and he was ALREADY out on a stroll!

Re: This 'Calico Basin'

It is kind of early, but try telling Henry's
tortoise that! Maybe this is the tortoise
that always wins the race!!!
