High on the top of Dixie  Sucess!

I slept in my truck along the access road. Arrived on top before 7am. I decided not to bother the lookout due to the early hour. Great views to Strawberry, Blue Mts, and nearby Vinegar.

snowshoe  Sucess!

drove over from Boise to snowshoe up this. Low snow year meant that the lower section was already melted out. In any event, nice day out in the mountains. Good views of the Strawberry Mtns and Vinegar Hill. I will have to have go back over to climb Vinegar Hill sometime.

Independence Day  Sucess!

Was camped at Dixie Campground with my family. I took my cousin and a couple of my uncles up. We followed the Forest Service on the drive up and took in the views as they got the tower ready for another season of fire duty.

Bumpy  Sucess!

It's only 5 miles up but get ready for a slow 5 miles. I met the lookout keeper up there and we chatted a while before I headed onto Vinegar Hill.

Dixie Butte  Sucess!

Great view of the Blue Mountains from the summit. It makes me want to hike in this area more often. Talked to the nice couple who stay at the lookout. They told me this was going to be one of their last weekends of the year up there since it was going to snow soon.

The first of 5  Sucess!

peaks in the area was Dixie Butte. We did Vinegar Hill and Big Lookout later on the same day and then did Rock Creek Butte and Elkhorn Peak the next day. Dennis Poulin, Bob Bolton and I met at the Dixie Campground and slept in our vehicles and then early the next morning, we rode up in Bob's 4runner to the lookout. No hike on our part but we did get to spend some time with the lookouts, a couple who did the lookout duty every summer up there. Great views in all directions and I think it'd be a great snowshoe hike as mentioned. I've since been back in the area to do Lookout Peak and Pedro Mtn. I would have added Ironside but about 600 feet below the summit, the lunch I had in Prairie City made me pay a big price. I'll be going back for Ironside.

Thanks for adding this one.

First snowshoe hike  Sucess!

A rare break in the weather during spring break allowed me a snowshoe attempt of the summit roughly 3 miles from the highway as the crow flies, closer to 5 miles following the road. The weather was beautiful and conditions were mild until reaching the saddle between the two summits where the wind blowing up the John Day Valley drastically cut the temperature. Without warmer gear I did not traverse the icy saddle to the summit. Although I have been on the summit a few times in the past by 4WD, I'd like to hike this again in the summertime without the snow.

This is a great viewpoint for the blue mountains and John Day Valley.

Made it back up here in my Toyota on a cloudy fall day. If given the opportunity I am going to take another snowshoe shot at this mountain during the winter.

Made a snowshoe attempt, conditions very wet and very windy. Lots of snow at this time.
