Downclimbing

Downclimbing

The central gully route was still full of snow forcing us to downclimb what otherwise would have been an easy scramble. Mount Baker is in the distance, July 23, 2011.

Downclimbing snow that steep would give me the heeby-jeebies! Nice photo. -Sarah

Re: No likey

Thanks Sarah! I have a strong dislike for downclimbing steep snow. Unfortunately this year the snow in Washington has been very slow to melt, so I've had to do this sort of thing more than ever before. -Adam

Downclimbing Pyramid

Did you have a hairy bergshrund at the base of the pyramid? That's what I remember about our climb. It was really steep, and if you fall, you'd probably peel everyone else on the rope off and you'd all go into the bergshrund. I thought it was pretty scary at times.

Re: Downclimbing Pyramid

Sorry for the delay. Somehow I missed this comment. There was not much of a schrund when we were there. It was only starting to open up on one side. But I can imagine that would be tricky.

Re: Great picture, Gimpi

Actually we did. We made about 3 rappels until there were no more suitable anchors and then we downclimbed the rest.
