Route Description
From the trailhead at 6,880', start climbing northwest up Forest Trail 74. This is also known as the Johnnie Canyon Trail. The trail is initially a
primitive road. As the trail climbs up
Johnnie Canyon through the trees, there are virtually no views. After 3.5 miles, you will meet the Carrizo Peak Trail 72 at a
signed trail junction. The elevation here is about 8,900'. Turn left, and climb southeast up Forest Trail 72 about 1.5 miles to the grassy summit. A
sign and a
rock cairn mark the summit. Trail 72 is faint in places because of low usage, but you shouldn't have too much trouble following it. Once at the summit, the views finally open up.
Hiking Distance: 10 miles round trip.
Elevation Gain: 2,800'.
