bwilldurYoshidaguchi at Night, No hut
Date Climbed: Sep 8, 2014
Wanted to hike Fujinomiya originally but the weather and timing didn't match up, so I elected to try for the Yoshidaguchi trail.

Started walking from the Fujisan train station and arrived at the Sengen Shine around 4pm for the official start of the hike. The lower stations were great but hiking at night there was not too much to see. The train of people and the desolate landscape after the 6th was a bit depressing. Altitude sickness kicked in pretty bad near the top and I slowed to a crawl. Summit at 5:30am, just after sunrise. Terribly boring descent and bused out slightly disappointed but proud.

ZeroFCWinter Climb  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 18, 2014
Winter season solo ascent. Second weekend in a row to make the climb - Weekend prior had to turn at station 8 because of wind conditions over 110km/h that would not let up. Yesterday was successful.

Yesterdays conditions in terms of wind was much better but temperatures were below -15c before taking wind chill into consideration which showed temps of 35c. Lots of hard snow/ice above station 8. Knowing how to self arrest is crucial. It was more challenging than I expected.

Done in a 24hr period.

Date Climbed: Jul 23, 2013
Climbed Fuji-Chan via the Gotemba Route with one experienced Mountaineer and 2 inexperienced hikers (all Japanese). Left at 7PM to hike under a full moon in hopes to reach the summit by sunrise. Unfortunately, I was the only person in our party that was able to summit to watch the sunrise. We were on the trail for 18 hours total due to the inexperienced hikers needing lots of rest stops. Super fun, although somewhat of a long slog...

This is one of the most rewarding hike if done off season and without the crowds. Did it as a day trip from Tokyo.

The trail to the summit is very crowded during the August season, and the summit is full of tourist. However the view is amazing and the acces to the mountain is very easy. Would like to try a winter ascent.

ZeroFCTerrible weather in September  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 3, 2008
One day climb during the first week of September 2008. I remember the weather was terrible at the summit with little viability and temperature at approx -10C. Regardless of the conditions, lots of people and even some young children were attempting to summit.

Might try again for a winter summit.

PJ92101Lockers at Kawiguchiko Station

PJ92101

Just for clarification on my previous post. There are lockers available at the Kawaguchiko train/bus station in town, that will accomodate typical "carry-on" type luggage.

If you are planning on doing a day hike at Mt Fuji and are departing from Kawaguchiko Station, they have lockers that are large enough to fit a typical black square roller type carry-on luggage.

Arrived at the Kawaguchiko 5th Station in the late evening, and tried to find a open room at the hut lodges within the station. Decided to use the remaining hours of daylight and head up to prepare to view the sunrise from the summit. We stopped at the 8th Station and turned around when the winds on the summit picked up speed and it began to look dangerous continuing upward.

I will have to get the summit next time. Can't wait to try some of the other Japanese mountains.

Climbing Japan's highest peak itself was not that exciting, but the view from the top is to die for. For anyone planning a climb of Mt. Fuji, I've compiled a page with the most frequently asked questions (FAQ): http://www.garyjwolff.com/climbing-mt-fuji.html
Best wishes !!

The park officially opened in July, but this year there was extra snow, so it wasn't going to open on time. There was a good trail about 2/3 up the mountain, but then it turned to snow/ice. I met three people on their descent, and after that I had the mountain to myself.

Mt. Fuji winter solo ascent via the Yoshidaguchi trail. Starting from all the way down in the town of Fujiyoshida. The hike was over a 3 day period requiring on-mountain camping at Umagaeshi and then somewhere below the 8th station for a final push to the summit. As luck would have it, over the course of the 3 days the weather was perfect for a winter climb.

The Japanese say regarding climbing Fuji "Once wise, twice fool" is certainly true. The night climb is unreal, with gruops of japanese with flashing lights, people with oxigen etc. But we climbed during a moon eclipse and it was magical. The sunrise is also really spectacular.

My first country highpoint. Hiked with the masses and spent the night at one of the huts near the top. The trash and crowds left me with the feeling that Fuji is best admired from a distance.

I must have been 11 or so while my dad was stationed in Japan at Yokosuka Naval Base. I climbed with my Aunt who came to visit in '85. I will have to look back at some of the pictures to see if I can nail down a date. I remember it was pretty cool, but didn't have any idea how tall it really is. I still have my "Fuji Stick" walking stick with all the stamps on it. My father in law is now stationed in Yokosuka and I may have to plan a trip to "visit" and climb again as an adult.
