3 hours up from the teleferico, 2 hours down. Socked in in fog all day today, and rained off and on. fun enough climb to acclimatize, intereesting little 4th class rocks at the top for a very short section.

|PAROFES||It was great! |

After 4 airports, no dinner last night and no breakfast today...
Quite tirying..but easy.
Great views to Guagua Pichincha!

Date Climbed: Dec 11, 2010
It was a fun scramble, esp if you veer off the cairned trail and start up the rock close to the saddle ridge. Good stuff!

Up the direct route and down the normal one, with Boriss and Liesbeth, who we met on the trail.
This was the hardest route I ever climbed free. Later, I found out it was rated III-. Fun climb though, and a great morale booster.

Date Climbed: Dec 7, 2010
Rob (HOL), Boris (my son) and I climbed Guagua Pichincha the day before. We saw Rucu in the distance.
Rob (HOL) and I climbed Rucu´s direct route along with Liesbeth (BEL). Hanna (SWE) climbed by the normal route alone and waited for us there.
Very nice scramble. Got to the top (4,698 m / 15,413) after two and a half hours after leaving the trailhead.
Met with Hana at the summit and had some snaks for 30 minutes with a Swiss and a Polish.
We got some hail on the way down, but nothing serious.

Very enjoyable climb!

Took Teleferico and summited Rucu via the standard route. The mountain becomes much more beautiful than from the city as you ascend. Saw some great animals and met many nice people. We were lucky for there was fresh snow on top. We got great views of the valley to the north and to Quito! Thanks to Lucho for the invite!

I took a taxi to the teleferico (4 dollars), was up the teleferico by 9am (8,5 dollars, opens at 8am on Saturday), short hike to the summit, which I summited with Esteban and Diego (from Quito, whom I met on the trail). Good views for only a few minutes from the summit, sunny but pretty cold at the top with the clouds.

|gconyers||Getting to Lloa |
Date Climbed: Oct 17, 2009
Public transport to Lloa options (we got to Lloa for $0.75 each, began at 1:30 PM in old town, arrived at 3 PM Lloa). We took the Trole to its southern end, and then caught a bus to Mena 2, a neighborhood on the west side of southern Quito (we asked an attendant which bus to take, then asked again when to get off). The bus dropped us off Calle Antonio Jose de Sucre and the Camino a Lloa (there´s a sign pointing to the right, up the hill). There are pickups there waiting to take you ($5 to Lloa, $70 to the refuge). BUT we took the bus, which picks people up on a side street (25c). If you walk from AJdeS toward Lloa on the Lloa road, take the first right over a curb (car´s can´t pass but you can) onto a side street. Here ask about the bus, there is a blue waiting room on the left side of the street with plastic chairs and bathroom in the back. I do not know how often service is, but we only waited about 10 min.
For the road to the refuge, get off the bus at the last place it stops and follow the main road down a big hill, and follow as it curves right up a big hill. 4 or 5 hours walking to the refuge, or take a pickup halfway (we paid $17) for 2h walking or farther, for more money.

Our hike started at (3,350 m / 10,988 ft). Got to the summit (4,781 m / 15,682 ft) after 5 and a half hours. Great views of the Cordillera Oriental.
The crater was completely covered by clouds but we still could smell the sulfur.
The roads from the town of Lloa to the refuge are in good conditions.. good news!

Three hours to the top. Weather was good but foggy. Climbed with Boriss (ECU). Stayed 5 seconds at the top and we boggied on down due to thunder threatening.
Nice views of Quito from the Teleferiqo area. A great acclimatization climb and training for the next climbs to be done in Ecuador.
