Yos Val according to Whitneywas caused by a cataclysmic earthquake not glaciers as Muir argued and proved. Whitney was a bit of a buffoon by he was very knowledgeable in most areas. "Up and Down California" by William Brewer (Mt. Brewer) of the original survey team under Whitney is a great historical read.
The Civil War was raging back east when these guys were bustin' butt "discovering" the Sierra.
