| thankfully we were among the first to set out and took our own route, "topping out" on several other interesting dunes along the way. | ||

| Hit High Dune after a long day on nearby 13er Twin Peaks. The plunge step descent makes the slog worth it! Great views when the sun is going down. Herard looks pretty nice. | ||

| davebobk47 | Cold Windy Day in the Dunes ![]() Date Climbed: Dec 21, 2007 | |
| Practically had the place to myself, only saw 4 other people the whole time and they were at the bottom. Bismark and I pushed through 40+ mph winds to summit High Dune. Star Dune was out of the question in that wind and cold. I'll be back though... | ||

| argothor | Twice in one day ![]() Date Climbed: Nov 26, 2001 | |
| I hiked up to the top of the Great Sand Dunes twice in the same day. After going up the first time, I get back to the parking lot and there are my friends and neighbors, Troy and Nickie, who just pulled into the parking lot to hike up to the summit. I don't know they were going to be there, but I joined up with them and hiked it yet again. | ||

| Don't recall exactly when I climbed this with AJ on a trip to the Dunes. It's interesting to hike around in the sand - great workout on the legs. More fun going down! | ||

| mountainloverCO | A Unique Experience ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 2, 2006 | |
| I was pleasantly surprised/amused to find this one on the summitpost website. In all seriousness though, this hike is a great lowerbody workout with stunning scenery throughout. A real must-do if you live in Colorado (or elsewhere for that matter!). I make the trek up High Dune every time I've visited the dunes. Just make sure your feet don't get burnt by the sand. As I've learned from experience, it can be scalding. | ||

| Zac Finley | A Must ![]() Date Climbed: May 30, 2005 | |
| Have made the trek up High Dune three times, all part of my road trips either going to or leaving Yellowstone from Atlanta. I always find a way to make it over to the dunes each summer, because it's like no other hike you can do anywhere else, unless you're in the Sahara. | ||

| Thomas Gurviez | beautiful ![]() Date Climbed: Jan 9, 2007 | |
| Beautiful area, a bizarre part of Sahara at 2500 meters... I was lucky for the climb because it was the last day of sun before a storm. No wind and pretty mild with the sun, but still some snow in north slopes. | ||

| shanrickv | 2 steps forward & 1 step backward! ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 30, 2006 | |
| Great climb, especially with kids. My brother and I started out with 6 of them and put 4 on the summit with minimal complaining. One of the cooler places in Colorado. | ||

| TiogaBradford | Surprising ![]() Date Climbed: Nov 25, 2005 | |
| Surprising how cold the sand was under the top sun-heated layer of sand. Of course, it didn't help that it was 10F the night before. | ||

| rasgoat | Fun! ![]() | |
| Just a great place, with the Crestones looming above. I liked climbing the steepest part of High Dune, it felt like I was going nowhere with every step but I eventually got there. Then run back down!!! | ||

| jfrishmanIII | Good fun ![]() Date Climbed: Jan 20, 2006 | |
| High Dune was a very pleasant winter outing, diversion from a road trip. The sand was pretty cold, but we still went barefoot for a good amount of time. Found some fulgurites: very cool! | ||

| Mark Doiron | Tougher Than It Looks! ![]() Date Climbed: Aug 4, 2006 | |
| Did it early in the morning and had wonderful light for photography! But, it is harder than it looks, both because of the altitude (over 8,000 feet), and because the sand made hiking so difficult. Well worth the view from the top, however! You'll see parts of the park that can't be seen from anywhere along the main roads. | ||
