Is that part of the

bamboo forest, or is it where the lava came
down off the volcano and left a treeless plain?

Pasochoa treeless plain.

It actually is the northeastern side of the volcano. I guess the lava came down by this side. The other side (the crater interior) feautures a thick bamboo forest, one of the best preserved primary forest of Ecuador.
