Hiking up Caldera de Taburiente

High on the western slopes of the crater the pine forest goes right up to the tree line. One of the logistical problems when hiking the long distance trail El Bastón, the GR 131, is that there is no accommodation between the coastal town of Puerto Tazacorte and Punta de los Roques. Furthermore, between the road at Mirador del Time (±500 m) and Roque de los Muchachos (2426 m), there is no water, and hardly a suitable place to pitch a tent. Either the trees are in the way, or it's too steep, usually both. In case of an emergency, this place would do, but it would mean camping on the trail itself, and, like I said, there's no water.
