Tioga is right; the AT doesn't touch the top any more. Just take the very overgrown road to the top.

tiogaAT doesn't touch top anymore
Date Climbed: Jul 27, 2013

I know that all maps & guides I have seen recently for the AT show the trail going right over the summit next to the towers. However, they must have re-routed the AT because we ended up looping just to the south of the summit and coming out to the hang-glider launch pad. From there we could look up and see the tower at the top, but the trail never took us up there. We kept going north on the AT and didn't bother to hike up to the top from there.

CheesySciFiAT from Elkwallow Picnic Area  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Feb 4, 2012

I hiked up the Appalachian Trail to Hogback from the Elkwallow Picnic Area. The day was cold and getting colder. It wasn't long before the snow was falling and soon it was starting to stick. The light blanket of snow on the ground was beautiful. It was a good winter day for a hike.

kavakSkyline Drive Appalacian Trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 4, 2004

While driving Skyline Drive with my daughter, she was not so enthusiastic about this summit. So I hopped out of the car for a quick jaunt to its summit. Well my solo hike worked because she decided to accompany me up Hawksbill a little ways up the road.

txmountaineerRoute Climbed: AT Date Climbed: 27 May 2004  Sucess!

Visited the highest point in Warren County, VA as part of a business trip. The hike was very short with the best views coming from the road at the beginning; the actual summit has a slight view through the trees, but the transmitters kill the wilderness feel. Don't get me wrong though, its a great and quick hike!

CharlesDRoute Climbed: Appalachian Trail (SoBo) Date Climbed: April 10, 1999  Sucess!

Nice summit. I especially like the hang glider launching 'ramp'. Sunny and getting unseasonably hot.

hgrapidRoute Climbed: Appalachian Trail, from Skyline Drive 20.1 Date Climbed: June 2003  Sucess!

We hiked down the AT from Little Devils Stairs overlook, and then went up a steep portion, which became flatter and led us to a house with high voltage signs. No view, but a nice, strenuous hike to cap our day.
