Holding Rock

Holding Rock

Massive holding rock (5m tall) by the trail leading to Loma del Pliegue Tumbado. As there is no mountain close to it, it is very strange to find it there, like this. Patagonia - Argentina

Classic perched boulder

I'd say the rock is a glacial erratic, deposited directly onto the bedrock when the ice sheet retreated at the end of the last ice age. If you look carefully you can find them all over the world (providing your in an area once covered by glaciers of course), and this is a beautiful example.

Re: Classic perched boulder

Thanks for the enlightment, I hadn't thought about it... doooh ! Patagonia was very glaciated, this explains why.
Merci !

Nice!

I've seen something similar in southern India, but they didn't know anything about glaciers, they were sure it was a miracle of a God.
