Holding the line...
Firefighters often use fire to fight fire. Here a hand trail has been established between the two firefighters and the burned area. Then the firefighters light what’s known as a “burn-out” a low intensity fire to burn the forest litter under the pines. This gives the firefighters the safety of having ‘black’ against their control lines and helps prevent rekindle adjacent to the line later when the firefighters have moved on.
