This scenario can be taken a step further by eliminating the gel and going with straight powder that gets disolved in your drinking source. I just tried this on the Solvang Autumn Double with a product called 'Sustained Energy' from Hammer Nutrition. It was pretty amazing to do a ride like that on essentially carbowater and a few pretzels. Some of the fast and light crowd go that way in the mountains.
For putting so much thought into that page- I am printing the recipe and heading to the store. Just got done with a long ski and the article resonates!
Thank you for your research, Travis! I have never used energy gels, but I am beginning to see the many benefits they can provide. One question for everybody--are those Coghlan's tubes the best or has anyone used something different? *visions of honey-like goo pouring out a faulty tube into my pack* Thanks again!
I started using gels on my triathlons but I have yet to use them on the trail. I can't wait to try making my own. I always enjoy eating something that I made myself, saving money, and reducing trash.
Thanks very much for putting this together, much appreciated.
What do people think about mixing powdered gatorade into the mixture instead of the sea salts, or better yet a crushed up electrolyte tablet. I haven't tried it yet, but think it could work even better than salt...?
That is a good idea, I have never tried it either, of course with adding powdered drink mix it will also add more sugar. And you would probably need to dissolve the drink mix in a little water first, and then mix in the syrup. If you try it, let me know how it works out and I will revise the article :)

GreatI like the way the article was written both from a scientific point of view and also from a SPer's point of view.

Thanks MoapaPk...for noticing that my GI for Agave Nector was incorrect, the value of 27 was based on the Glucose scale.

Good oneA very informative article.
I'm not a fan of gels, but now I have to try out to make one.
I found a data base for GI.
