How to Make a Frozen Waterfall

How to Make a Frozen Waterfall

I accomplished this by hanging a bundle of steel cable and old climbing and static ropes all bound together with wire in a waterfall at Land of the Arches Campground where I work. I tried this last year and got this same result but I only used one 6000 lb. rope and it failed under the weight of the ice. The coulmn is 100 feet tall. The column formed in about 16 hours with the air temps in the single digits. A few hours after I took this photo, it warmed up enough to melt the ice and it all fell off. If you look close, you can see the rope in a few places where the ice is thin. I'm currently still working this experiment and will post any new results. I'm hoping to make a 100 foot tall Ice Christmas Tree! A great use for retired climbing ropes.
