I have heard of fear of flying,

but this is absurd. Think of all the other ways you may die (of which several will probably be more unpleasant than a plane crash - think of a slow death from cancer, or having your brain eaten away by Alzheimer's during a decade). Of course your FOF is probably something more deep-sited and irrational, but I'm sure that it could be mitigated by medicine, for instance benzodiazepines. There are even several MDs on this site that you could ask.

I have not flown since 1988

for no particular reason. But I remember when the jet hit bad weather and jumped around in the air I was mortified! Palms sweating, heart racing while people around me were snoozing or reading the paper. Hurtling through space in a hunk of steel completely out of my control!

No astronaut here my friend! hehe
