"Please Return to Seats."

The Grand Canyon: its stone pages often filled with human drama, sometimes tragedy. On the morning of June 30, 1956, two commercial airplanes collided 13,000 ft above the Grand Canyon, their wreckage scattered at two sites between Temple Butte and Chuar Butte (pictured -- 6,394') downstream from the Colorado River/Little Colorado confluence. Upon impact following the collision, the searing heat of the crash melted and fused the aluminum of the airplane's bodies to the canyon's bedrock, and all 128 people on board the planes perished. Several years later, hikers at the crash site found a small sign amid the exposed wreckage reading: "Please Return to Seats."
