South Side of the Sky

South Side of the Sky

"The sunshine, in mountains sometimes lost .. The river can disregard the cost .. And melt in the sky ... warmth when you die .. Were we ever warmer on that day? ... a million miles away .. We seemed from all of ETERNITY ..." The southernmost section of the Colorado Plateau, as viewed north of Sedona from the Sugarloaf trail. These landforms form a colorful backdrop along the eastern rim of Mormon Canyon, which is always a joy to navigate through amongst the never-ending stands of cypress trees and spiny desert plants. Re: warm...

Warmth is what I feel (now) after winter has
gone, the hummingbirds are flying, the trees
are budding out ...

and an endless summer is just 'round the
blazing corner. Thanks ... Tomek!

Awww Larry...

One of my FAVORITE Yes tunes, EVER! Saw the Classic Yes lineup (Jon Anderson, Steve Howe, Chris Squire, Rick Wakeman, Alan White - not Bill Bruford) perform this song at the Tweeter Center (nee Great Woods Center for the Performing Arts) in Mansfield, Mass. on August 2nd, 2002. 20th (or so) row - slightly left of center, right in front of Steve Howe! GREAT seats! Nice sound system, too.

Studio version here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XC-FrJ8W0Yc

I LOVE Wakeman's melodic interlude, the beautiful piano/Mini-Moog parts and Jon Anderson's great counter-point vocal lines - to me South Side of the Sky is just an enduring monument to the ultimate in musical skill, talent, and creativity.

That 2002 concert was my son Lewis IV's (he's 19 now - he was 10 at the time!) second BIG concert ever. He's been a big Yes fan since I can remember: He stole my Close to the Edge CD at age 7 and trashed it - not that I minded too much! Turn of the Century off Going For The One literally brings tears to his eyes to this day.

His first concert? Kenny Wayne Shepherd backing up Jimmy Page and the Black Crowes! Same venue, July 2001, 11th row center. JP & BC opened with Celebration Day - and the little dude didn't know whether to shit or go blind! He was AWESTRUCK!

The entire concert was just stunning. Zep live - with ALL the parts! I'm a proud father, and I KNOW that on that day his life changed forever!

Thanks for the beautiful pic, for the link to a great live performance, for taking me back to a beautiful memory, and for your commitment to keeping old-school prog-rock alive.

Peace,

Big Lew

Re: Awww Big Lew ...

Man ... you just brought a tear to my eye!

My favorite memory was WHEN I was living as a
homeless vagabond, DRIFTING between my
parents house in Utah and the remarkably
wide expanse (for younger eyes) of ARIZONA.

I remember stopping at a Strip Mall in southern Utah, and watching a televised
concert of the classic "YES" lineup on video.

To say the least, it was so memorizing and
uplifting ... and so wonderfully CLEAR!

My life seemed to strike a chord after that.

I found a seasonal job, finished four years
of college, and settled back in central AZ.

Yes, "Yes" has always been an integral part
of, FIRST ... my 8-track, then cassette, and third my CD collection.

Lew, I hope your son keeps the spirit of
these live performances in his mind's eye..

THANKS for the memories ...
