Up Around The Bend

Up Around The Bend

"There's a place up ahead and I'm goin', Just as fast as my feet can fly. Come away, come away if you're goin', Leave the sinkin' ship behind. Come on the risin' wind, We're goin' up around the bend ..." Horseshoe Bend is the name for a horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River located near the town of Page, Arizona. The bend is locally known as "King Bend." It is located slightly downstream from the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell within Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, about four miles or 6 km south of Page. Accessible via a ¾-mile (1.2 km) hike from U.S. Route 89, it can be viewed from the steep cliff above. According to Google terrain maps, the overlook is 4,200 feet above sea level and the Colorado River is at 3,200 feet above sea level making it a breathtaking 1,000 foot drop. Lots of skeeters, so bring yer darn bug spray ... Now, I have to go outside to shoe the hosses! May 22, 2010

Skeeters?

I didn't know there was skeeters out there. When we were doing Waterholes Canyon, we camped on one of these ledges (free camping). When we woke up in the morning, we had no idea how thin of an over hang it was. Nice shot!

Re: Skeeters?

Thanks, did you notice the boat?

You were on the ledge? That's very sick!

Yup, did look like a few skeeters early in the morning along the trail.

Lots of sand fleas, too ... but, not complaining!
