A cloud casts a shadow on "the lighthouse of the Mediterranean,"a stratavolcano in the Mediterranean Sea. I took this photo from the stern of a seafaring vessel just off the north coast of Sicily in Aug. 1976.
(Two seabirds can be seen to the left of the volcano.) Stromboli is a very active volcano, as evidenced by the "lava channels" along the volcanoes' flanks. It was apparently passive when our ship passed by.
